In the early 1700s, the sixth tribe, the Tuscaroras migrated from North Carolina to the border regions between New York and Pennsylvania and united with the original five tribes into one cohesive alliance.

- The two principal tribes in the territory between Grays Harbor and the headwaters of the Chehalis River were the Lower Chehalis and the Upper Chehalis. These two tribes spoke distinct yet related Salish languages and maintained close ties through visiting, trade and intermarriage. The Copalis, Wynoochee and Humptulips people were affiliated with the Lower Chehalis; the Satsop seem to have been considered Lower Chehalis politically but spoke a dialect more similar to Upper Chehalis. The name "Chehalis" (meaning "sand") originally referred to a village near the present-day town of Westport and later came to be applied to the river and to the people living upriver.

The Hoh Tribe has formed Tribal Government under Public Law 89-655, providing for a basic roll of tribal members. The livelihood of the Hoh Indians is primarily fishing although a few of the residents make traditional baskets, carved canoes for ocean going or river use, and other carvings. The local people dip for smelts on the beaches and use smokehouses for preserving food for future use. The tidelands are abundant with razor clams, butter clams, crab and perch fishing.

- The Iowa Tribe of Kansas and Nebraska is located along the Missouri River on an approximately 2,100-acre reservation straddling the borders of northeast Kansas (Brown County) and southeast Nebraska (Richardson County). According to 1995 figures, the Tribe owns 947.63 acres in Kansas, and 181.01 acres are in tribal member allotments. In Nebraska the Tribe owns 280 acres and 210.06 acres are in tribal member allotments. The BIA indicated that were 1,618.7 acres of Iowa tribal lands in trust status in 1995.

The tribe originally lived on South Island in Lac Vieux Desert until they moved to the south shore of the lake around 1880.
