    Shung Ye Museum Formosan Aborigines
      Asia
Austronesian people began to arrive in Taiwan around 6,000 years ago, giving rise to the indigenous culture that still exists in the Central Mountain Range and along the eastern coastal areas of the island. Among the 19 tribes remaining nowadays, nine have managed to preserve their distinct customs and languages relatively well. These nine tribes are the Saisiat, Atayal, Tsou, Bunun, Ami, Rukai, Puyuma, Paiwan, and Yami. The brand-new Shung Ye Museum of Formosan Aborigines houses a refined collection of 1,000 artifacts, mainly from these nine tribes. First of its kind in Taiwan, the museum is also dedicated to preserving indigenous culture and enhancing understanding among the different ethnic groups.

1492 exhibit- Incursions in North America
      US - Southeast
Incursions in North America The French, Spanish, Portuguese, and English arrived in North America in the 16th century, sporadically and in small numbers. Fishermen plied their trade off the Newfoundland coast from around 1500. Some Europeans hoped to find an alternative route to Asia (the Northwest Passage), wealthy civilizations, or precious metals, but few found what they sought. They did not however, confront an untamed wilderness but rather people who often lived in villages and towns. [(16th century) Library of Congress]

With this in mind, most of my jewelry is at much at home at the opera as it is at a rodeo. To encourage the evolution of quillwork, I teach the methods of quilling and promote a fresh look to where this artform could be taken. ---- Christy Ann Hensler's quillwork is *truely* amazing ----

      Aotearoa-New Zealand
Aboriginal paintings are the oldest living art tradition in the world and yet represents one of the most fascinating and popular art investments to date. The Australian Aboriginals see themselves as the custodians of this country. Their dreaming is not just of the land, but of the song, dance and mythology of the land. The paintings we see on canvas today were originally painted in the sand and only lasted until the wind blew. Canvas is durable and has given the world a chance to learn about the Aboriginals' 'dreaming', their way of life and values.

    Akha Heritage Foundation
    Akha Asia
A not-for-profit, non-religiously or politically-affiliated, grassroots organization dedicated to improving the life-threatening realities that confront the Akha of 300 plus mountain villages in northen Thailand, Myanmar, Laos, China and Vietnam. We believe that the annhilation of a culture is not only a complete disregard of a very basic human right, but a tragedy suffered by the world at large and its future generations, as already experienced countless times throughout history. The Akha are a unique people with deep, rich traditions which are on the verge of being completely destroyed, and we are in the process of trying to uphold for them the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.

Alaskan Native Cultures & Russian Church
      US - Alaska
Confronting these documents, mostly written in Russian but some in the Alaskan Native languages of Aleut, Eskimo, and Tlingit, Dr. Ivanov has resuscitated the vibrant, incredibly moving human exchanges that took place between the priests of the Russian Orthodox Church in Alaska and Native Alaskans, during the years 1794 to about 1915. These remarkable priests, intrepid heroes such as the Russian "giant" Ioann Veniaminov and the Creole Iakov Netsvetov, were not merely essential to the success of the colony established by the Russian American Company in 1784, they were also the agents through which much of the culture and languages of Native Alaskans were preserved. Only in recent years has the magnitude of their achievement been recognized -- and most appropriately during this 200th anniversary of the founding of the first Orthodox mission in North America in 1794.

    All About Rope

The Introduction of Spectra, Kevlar and more recently Vectran has changed the way we rig our boats just as significantly as the introduction of Nylon and Polyester in the 1950's. But choosing the right rope from the bewildering election available is not as hard as it seems. Selecting the correct fibre is fundamental. Pick the wrong one and you will either end up with a rope that is inadequate for the job, or more expensive than it need be. In most applications high strength and low stretch are priorities. Don't go mad though; there are applications where a little bit of give can be a good thing. Anchor warps are the obvious example but there is a place for some shock absorption in other places too, like trapeze wire adjusters. Six materials are commonly used to make ropes.
